Bueno, let me begin by dropping a quick thank you to Arelis, la Editora-In-Chief, for letting me park my cinematic opinions within the pages of Acontecer Latino. Let’s have some fun Arelis. Now, for you, the reader, here’s the one thing you need to know about my reviews. I will never say don’t go see it. Nunca. Why? Because, unlike a real critic, I know how hard it is to write, fundraise, cast, shoot, edit and release a flick. It’s HARD at any level people. So I’m a little more forgiving. I might say wait for it to show up on CBS on a rainy Sunday, but I would never keep you from someone’s work. This is, after all, just an opinion. That being said, let’s move on to my first review.

JOKER. Yes, I saw it. You should, too.

A masterpiece. Hands down. Una obra de arte… If you can live without the capes and tights. Atención, this is not a kiddie flick. Don’t show up with your toddler looking for shiny teeth and flying red boots. This is another gritty, grimy, low-down dirty version of the DC super villain. For those of you that were worried about someone stepping into Heath Ledger’s wide clown shoes, let me tell you Joaquin Phoenix showed up to play. That Boricua from Rio Piedras put in a performance that was disturbingly entertaining and a little too real for comfort. I can see why some across the country have decided to walk out. It really is disturbing, to the point of making you want to investigate your neighbor up the street. It was also a treat to see Hollywood dress up parts of Washington Heights and other notable NYC spots with beautiful cinematography. No spoilers, but De Niro drops into tango with our man and the two lay down a scene that had me holding my breath for about 7 minutes. Kudos to director Todd Phillips for reminding us all what patient filmmaking looks like. He takes his time letting scenes play out. At times it felt like he just placed a camera on a tripod and gave his actor all the space in the world to do what he does. And when that actor is the guy who played Commodus in Gladiator and Johnny Cash in Walk The Line, what he do is usually cinematic gold. Grab a ticket and a bucket of the buttered stuff. I promise you will forget you’re watching a comic book character that fights with a guy dressed up in a bat suit who runs around the city talking in a deep whisper. Enjoy and let me know if you agree. @VictoriousRamos
